The Intermountain Region Boise Forest in Idaho has announced a proposal to adjust recreation fees at multiple sites under the Recreation Enhancement Act Fee Program. The changes include the introduction of new fees and increases at various developed recreation sites.
A detailed list of all affected sites and their proposed fee adjustments is available for public review on the ePublic Comments on Recreational Fee webpage.
The Boise National Forest is seeking public feedback through September 4. Stakeholders can submit their comments via US mail or hand delivery to Boise National Forest, Attn: Recreation Fees, 1249 S. Vinnell Way, Suite 200, Boise, ID 83709.
Alternatively, comments can be emailed or made by calling Everardo Santillan, the Forest Recreation Program Manager, at 208-373-4100 during regular business hours. An interactive web map is also available for public use to submit comments online.
The proposed fee adjustments aim to better align the cost of site usage with the amenities provided and to support ongoing and future improvements at these locations.
Past revenues from these fees have funded enhancements such as additional campsites, the expansion of spurs to accommodate larger camp trailers, and the installation of facilities compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, including accessible toilets and picnic tables.
Approximately 70 percent of the developed recreation sites within the forest will continue to be free of charge.
Post-public consultation, substantive feedback will be reviewed and considered in the final proposal, which will be evaluated by a citizen’s resource advisory committee.
This committee represents a diverse array of interests and will submit their recommendations to the Forest Service Intermountain Regional Forester for final approval. If approved, the new fees would be implemented in 2025.
The fee adjustments are made possible under the authority of the 2004 Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act, which allows the Forest Service to retain at least 80 percent of the collected recreation fees locally.
These funds are crucial for maintaining and improving campground infrastructures, addressing deferred maintenance, and hiring additional recreation staff during peak seasons.
The Boise National Forest has operated a recreation fee program since 1997, seeing various changes over the years driven by public input, legislative updates, and program development. The fees not only support the operation of these sites but also help to provide a high-quality recreational experience that meets public expectations.
Notable changes include Big Trinity Cabin #1 increasing from $30.00 to $80.00, Elk Flat Group Campground from $100.00 to $200.00, and Atlanta Cabins #1 and #2, newly priced at $100.00 each.
These adjustments aim to improve infrastructure and ensure the sustainability of the parks. For a comprehensive list of all proposed fee changes and to provide your feedback, please visit the Boise National Forest’s official recreation fee webpage.
Adjusting fees at national parks and campgrounds is crucial for maintaining facilities, enhancing visitor experiences, and supporting conservation efforts.
This financial support helps manage increasing visitor impacts, ensures park sustainability, and benefits local economies, making it essential for preserving these natural spaces for future generations.
