Challis Hot Springs Joins Idaho’s State Park System: A New Chapter for Outdoor Recreation and Local Growth

The Land of the Yankee Fork State Park has expanded with the addition of Challis Hot Springs, an event that was celebrated last week at a ceremony marking the change in ownership of the site to the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.

Lorna Hammond, whose family owned the business, shared memories of the hot springs at the May 3 ceremony, according to a report by the Challis Messenger.

Idaho Gov. Brad Little attended the dedication event, engaging in conversations with attendees after the ceremony.

Challis Hot Springs is now an operating unit of the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park, alongside other notable attractions such as the interpretive center, day-use site, ghost towns of Custer, Bayhorse, and Bonanza, the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge, and the bison kill site next to the interpretive center.

Members of the Hammond family were present during the ceremony, observing the change in ownership of Challis Hot Springs to the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. Lorna Hammond and Susan Buxton, director of the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, wrapped up the ceremony, signifying the transfer of ownership.

This change in ownership and the expansion of the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park is expected to have a positive economic impact on the local community. The incorporation of Challis Hot Springs into the state park system will likely attract more visitors, boosting revenue for local businesses and creating new job opportunities in the outdoor recreation industry.

The park’s newest addition is part of a diverse range of outdoor activities available to visitors. With the incorporation of Challis Hot Springs, the park can now cater to even more outdoor enthusiasts interested in hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and stargazing.

The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation plays a significant role in managing and preserving the natural resources of the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park, including Challis Hot Springs. The department’s efforts focus on protecting the park’s ecosystems, wildlife, and cultural heritage, while promoting sustainable and responsible outdoor recreation practices.

The expansion of the state park system with Challis Hot Springs reflects the growing trend of outdoor recreation as a key contributor to local economies and tourism. The park’s appeal to a wider audience will undoubtedly benefit both the surrounding community and the state’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

As the hot springs site officially becomes part of the state parks system, it marks a new chapter in its history and the ongoing efforts to preserve the natural beauty and resources of the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park. This development showcases the importance of outdoor recreation and the positive impact it can have on local communities.

The ceremony at Challis Hot Springs signifies not only the expansion of the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park but also the ongoing commitment to preserving Idaho’s natural resources and fostering a thriving outdoor recreation industry

The incorporation of Challis Hot Springs into the state park system is a testament to the importance of these efforts and the value they bring to the local community and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
