Hernando County is evaluating a new glamping project proposed by Julie Bishop, reflecting the growing trend in outdoor hospitality. The Hernando County Board of Commissioners recently voted for a continuance, allowing Bishop to adjust her plans for a glamping experience on a 5.1-acre parcel on Ponce De Leon Boulevard near the Cobb intersection according to an article by Hernando Sun.

The rezoning process in Hernando County involves complex procedures, including reviews of detailed development plans and permits for specific land uses. While the zoning board initially recommended approving the rezoning, the Hernando County commissioners had concerns that led to the continuance.

Bishop envisions the site as more than just accommodation, describing it as a space for meditation, yoga, and sound healing, emphasizing its family-oriented nature. Her concept includes features designed to allow visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of Brooksville.

Following the continuance, Bishop has been working with Hernando County Senior Planner Omar De Pablo to refine her master plan. The revised plan significantly reduced the number of RV bays from the original 27-30 to meet the threshold of 11 RVs per acre, while maintaining 8-10 glamping spots.

Vice Chairman Brian Hawkins expressed appreciation for Bishop’s efforts to address the board’s concerns and revise her plans accordingly. He viewed the project as a potential glamping and RV destination resort.

The plan includes addressing septic concerns raised by Commissioner John Allocco, particularly given that the property is in a flood zone. De Pablo noted that while the property size required a deviation, only minimum requirements for permanent structures, such as restrooms, needed to be met.

As Hernando County considers this new approach to outdoor hospitality, the potential for increased tourism and economic benefits exists. The project aligns with the increasing demand for distinctive outdoor accommodations, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of hybrid work models.
