The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the opening of its application window for the 2024 Recreation Economy for Rural Communities planning assistance program. This initiative aims to support nationwide communities in leveraging their outdoor recreation to enhance local economies while fostering sustainable development and revitalization of Main Street.
Applications are being accepted until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on October 16. Communities affected by Hurricane Helene, however, will have an extended deadline until November 13, offering additional time for those facing recovery challenges.
According to a press release, with the growing popularity of outdoor recreation across the United States, rural communities are increasingly looking to capitalize on their natural landscapes. The program provides a unique opportunity for these regions to expand their tourism offerings, invest in local infrastructure, create jobs, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
The Recreation Economy for Rural Communities program involves an in-depth planning process supported by a team of experts designed to bring together local stakeholders, residents, and business owners. This collaborative effort centers around a community workshop, a critical event that is the focal point for developing actionable strategies and a shared vision for the community’s future.
Over eight to twelve months, the planning team will work with community members to set goals, prioritize actions, and outline steps that align with the community’s outdoor assets and economic aspirations.
Expanding outdoor trail networks is one example of how the initiative can lead to tangible economic benefits. By developing and marketing these assets, communities can attract overnight visitors, driving local business growth and creating opportunities for new enterprises.
The program also promotes the development of in-town amenities that support both residents and visitors. This includes efforts to expand broadband access, install electric vehicle charging stations, and create mixed-use spaces like shops, restaurants, and breweries.
