Yosemite Valley Campsites to Close as Heatwave Sparks Risk of Flooding

In anticipation of the upcoming heatwave and melting snow, Yosemite National Park officials have announced the temporary closure of campsites in Yosemite Valley, effective Friday.

The decision comes as the Merced River at Pohono Bridge is expected to reach flood stage levels, prompting park officials to issue a flood watch for the area.

The snowpack in the southern Sierra is currently measuring at 256% of normal levels, raising concerns about the potential for severe flooding.

The heatwave expected this weekend is set to cause snow to dissolve at a faster rate, putting low-lying areas at risk of flooding.

Areas throughout the Central Valley, including Tulare Lake Basin, have already experienced flooding this year, with the once-dry lake now submerged under water.

As a result, Yosemite National Park officials have taken precautionary measures to prevent any harm to visitors or property.

Private campground owners and operators in the nearby area have also been advised to take necessary precautions and prepare for potential flooding.

Those in low-lying areas are urged to keep a close eye on water levels and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of guests and property.

While the Yosemite Valley campsites will be closed, visitors can still explore other parts of the park, including Wawona, Mariposa Grove (accessible only by hike), and the Crane Flat area.

However, officials warn that parking in western Yosemite Valley will be extremely limited, and no services will be available in the closed area.

In a tweet, the National Weather Service office in Hanford, California, stated, “Snowmelt due to much warmer than normal temperatures are projected to melt snow, leading to rises in creeks, streams, and rivers through the park.”

The park officials have urged visitors to exercise caution when hiking or exploring the open areas of the park, especially around waterways.

The closure of Yosemite Valley campsites is a necessary precautionary measure to ensure the safety of visitors and property during the potential risk of flooding.

Officials have assured visitors that the closure will be temporary, and the area will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do so.

As the region braces for potential flooding, private campground owners and operators in the nearby area are encouraged to take necessary steps to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

The National Park Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
