Northeast California Campgrounds to Open on May 1

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced the seasonal opening of several campgrounds and a day-use area in northeast California, catering to outdoor enthusiasts as the summer and fall recreation seasons approach.

According to a press release, starting May 1, the Hobo Camp Day Use Area in Lassen County will welcome visitors. Located on the west edge of Susanville, accessible via South Street, the area is known for its picnic-friendly setting with tables, barbecue grills, and fire rings. Additionally, it serves as a trailhead for the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, offering various outdoor activities.

Further enhancing the region’s camping offerings, the North Eagle Lake Campground is set to open on May 15. Situated along County Road A1, approximately 30 miles north of Susanville, this campground features 20 developed campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Visitors can expect amenities such as potable water, fire rings, picnic tables, and vault toilets, with fees set at $8 per night for a single site and $12 for multiple occupancy. Suitable for RVs up to 35 feet and trailers, the site also includes a dedicated host to assist campers.

Already open for the season, the undeveloped camping areas at Rocky Point along the lake’s shore offer a more rustic experience for those seeking solitude and a direct connection with nature.

In eastern Shasta County, the BLM’s Pit River Campground will begin hosting guests on May 1. Located five miles east of Fall River Mills along State Route 299, the campground is equipped with eight campsites, a group site, a kayak launch, and a fishing pier designed to accommodate visitors with disabilities.

The Pit River Campground and Hobo Camp Day Use Area are notable not only for their recreational opportunities but also for their accessibility features. The latter is a hub for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, featuring 12 picnic sites complete with modern amenities. It also serves as the starting point for excursions on the 25-mile Bizz Johnson Trail and the 7-mile South Side Trail, which leads to Devil’s Corral.

As the season progresses, visitors are encouraged to check online resources for the most up-to-date information regarding campground statuses. For more information, visit here.
