Benchmark Vehicles Unveils the AWOL Iglhaut Allrad 170 in the U.S.

Benchmark Vehicles, renowned for crafting some of the most adept overlanding travel vans globally, has made waves with the introduction of their AWOL Custom Sprinter. This vehicle, featuring the first-ever Iglhaut Allrad 170 van in the U.S., is a testament to Benchmark’s commitment to setting new standards in expedition vans.

The AWOL Sprinter stands out with its 11-inch lift, expertly engineered for overlanding. Whether it’s for camping expeditions, cross-country road trips, or navigating deep backcountry trails, this van is built to tackle advanced terrains with ease.

Leland Gilmore, the owner and founder of Benchmark Vehicles, emphasizes the company’s dedication to bringing clients’ visions to life with top-tier expertise in design, cabinetry, electrical, and bodywork.

Starting with a standard 170 two-wheel drive Sprinter from Mercedes-Benz, the van undergoes a transformation in partnership with Iglhaut Allrad in Germany, according to a press release.

Iglhaut, known for creating all-wheel-drive systems for mining rigs and overlanding expedition vans, equips the AWOL with front and rear electronic locking differentials and a center locking transfer case. This ensures the synchronized rotation speed of all wheels, providing unparalleled traction.

The modifications don’t stop there. Iglhaut modifies the van’s programming to accommodate 37-inch off-road tires while maintaining active brake and lane assist systems. With an 11-inch lift and rechanneled wheel wells, the van comfortably fits these large off-road tires.

Furthermore, Iglhaut re-gears the front and rear axles for the AWOL, optimizing it for overlanding’s low RPMs. On highways, the AWOL performs on par with any factory-made 170 Sprinter, easily achieving speeds over 70 mph.

Off-road, the AWOL showcases its prowess. It can climb steep terrains, navigate through 18-inch deep mud bogs, power through snowbanks, and handle loose, gravelly trails. Its axles are designed for superior articulation, ensuring stability even in challenging conditions.

Inside, the AWOL doesn’t compromise on luxury. The interior space measures 170 inches in length, 68 inches in width, and 76 inches in height, comfortably accommodating tall travelers.

Benchmark Vehicles has integrated a full rear bed, a spacious couch and table area that can convert into a bed, and a well-equipped galley with an induction cooktop, sink, and ample cabinet space.

Every detail of the AWOL is meticulously crafted. From the seating systems, which include orthopedic driver and passenger seats from Scheel-Mann, to the interior walls upholstered in a rich dark gray marine-grade fabric, no stone is left unturned.

The van also boasts a powerful 640-amp hour lithium battery bank, 245-watt solar panels, and a top-notch audio system.
