New 4WD-Accessible Campground To Open In Litchfield National Park

As part of the $17.5 million Turbo Charging Tourism Project, Litchfield National Park is opening up a new campground with ten sites at Central Valley this weekend. In the next few months, second and third campgrounds will be open to make Central Valley a total 32-site area.

Minister for Parks and Rangers Selena Uibo stated that the Government is committed to conserving and protecting our parks. These upgrades will reduce overcrowding by adding new camping, swimming, and walking areas to please all ages.

There will be campgrounds near spring-fed creeks and a new lookout that offers views of an escarpment and new biking and hiking trails connecting Central Valley to Lost City, and Litchfield Park Access Rd.

It’s not as easy as just setting up your tent and dropping $6 into the honesty box. There are quite a few new rules around these campgrounds so listen up!

These campgrounds are only accessible by 4WD and require high clearance. You will need to leave your campervan at home if you wish to camp here.

You will need to reserve your spot at the Central Valley campgrounds in advance and online, unlike almost every other campsite in Litchfield National Park. This booking process is more complicated than click and pay.

To confirm availability, it is best to contact the permits office first. You can make reservations up to three months in advance.

If there’s still room, you’ll need to complete a booking application form, email it to the permits office, and pay your camping fee upfront. You will be contacted by the office to find out if your permit was approved.

A gate blocks the road to Central Valley. Only those with a key can open it. To get your key, you must visit Milner (Darwin), or Katherine before you leave on your trip. The $250 deposit must be made at the office. This can be paid in cash or by credit card.

Within three days of the expiration of your permit, make sure to return the key to our office.

To camp in Central Valley, you will need to visit the area between May and November. The road to Central Valley is closed to all vehicles during the wet season.

Litchfield campgrounds accept payment via an honesty box system. However, to camp in Central Valley, you will need to pay when making your reservation.

There is a maximum of six people per campsite. Only one trailer or a vehicle is allowed per site.
