The Alabama State Parks System is undergoing a $150 million renovation, with upgrades and new constructions aimed at enhancing visitor experiences across multiple parks. Led by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the initiative seeks to improve and modernize the state’s natural attractions.

Gulf State Park is a focus of these renovation efforts, with the repair of the Hurricane Sally-damaged pier nearing completion. “The pier project is almost done and should be completed in September, and that’s on track with what we expected the whole time,” Greg Lein, state parks director, said.

Additionally, the Beach Pavilion’s bathrooms are receiving an HVAC system upgrade, essential for accommodating the heavy beach traffic during summer months.

According to an article published by The News Courier on August 10, the park is also converting its old golf course into a new campground, offering modern amenities such as a pool, clubhouse, and splash pad. The construction is set to unfold in two phases, providing over 260 sites.

At Lakepoint State Park, renovations are ongoing at the lodge, particularly on the waterfront-facing half, with completion expected by fall. This renovation is anticipated to align with the Christmas season.

Another upgrade is underway at Meaher State Park, located on the Battleship Parkway. A new campground area is being added, featuring 45 sites, a bathhouse, six cabins, and a camp store.

Chewacla State Park near Auburn is also set to introduce a new barndominium pavilion. This space will host meetings and special events, equipped with bathrooms and roll-up doors Additionally, Wind Creek State Park on Lake Martin is seeing the construction of new cottages and campground renovations. The upgrades are aimed at accommodating large, modern RVs, with wider sites and improved electrical service.

Lake Lurleen State Park, near Tuscaloosa, is scheduled for overhaul. The project includes the renovation of all campground sites and the addition of tiny house cabins, a first for the park.

Cheaha State Park, the oldest in Alabama, is also preparing for changes with the construction of a new lodge. The design will incorporate locally sourced materials, blending with the natural surroundings while offering panoramic views from every room.

Additional projects across the state include new facilities at Rickwood Caverns State Park, a pool house at DeSoto State Park, and a new cart path at Lake Guntersville State Park. Renovations are also underway at Monte Sano State Park and Joe Wheeler State Park.
