Alabama Governor Awards Grant to Build RV Store, Camping Resort

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has awarded nearly $1 million to welcome new businesses to the city of Heflin and create 130 jobs in the northeast region of Alabama.

According to a release, the $950,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded to Heflin will allow building Great American RV Superstores and an RV resort. This development will be situated on a 30-acre property within Heflin Industrial Park.

Travel and camping by recreational vehicle is flourishing, and Alabama, with its year-round moderate weather and scenic beauty, is a destination for RV travelers,” Gov. Ivey said.

This latest venture in Heflin will provide a wonderful site for RV owners wishing to have their vehicles serviced, buy a new vehicle or just enjoy a wonderful campground. It will also create new job opportunities for the people of Heflin and the surrounding area.”

CDBG funds will be used to supply the public with water and sewage for the development being constructed on Alabama Highway 46 near Interstate 20.

Great American RV is anticipated to invest between $18 to 20 million to develop the project and estimates that the business could bring in $100 million in sales annually. The RV resort will include 375 paved campsites, as well as several cabins in addition to other facilities like hiking trails, the splash pad and pool, as well as a dog park and a restaurant.

Two Great American RV Superstores are located in north Alabama including Calera and Red Bay, which is the headquarters of Tiffin Motorhomes Inc.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs will manage the grant that was made possible through funding from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“ADECA is happy to join Gov. Ivey and the city of Heflin in playing a role in this development which will benefit Heflin and northeast Alabama,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said.

ADECA manages various programs to support traffic safety, law enforcement, energy conservation, economic development, water resource management, and recreation development.
