A recent survey by the RV Industry Association (RVIA) has revealed that 21 million Americans plan to travel by recreational vehicle (RV) during the upcoming holiday season, highlighting the growing popularity of this travel method.
The survey indicates that nine million will travel by RV for Thanksgiving and seven million for Christmas, with travelers emphasizing the comfort and flexibility RVing provides for connecting with loved ones.
According to a press release, Monika Geraci, spokesperson for the RVIA, described RVing as an opportunity to create lasting memories while enjoying nature or visiting family in a personalized setting. “Whether you’re seeking snowy adventures, headed south for warmer weather, or traveling to see friends and family, an RV allows you to create lasting memories in a comfortable and convenient setting,” she said.
The survey identified that 35% of leisure travelers plan to take an RV trip in the next year, showcasing the year-round appeal of RV travel. Popular winter trips include visiting family, chosen by 63% of respondents, and road trips, preferred by 57%.
Additionally, motivations for winter RVing include snowbirding (57%) and seeking winter or snow-based experiences (45%).
In the context of broader trends, about 25% of leisure travelers expressed interest in purchasing an RV in the near future.
Beyond convenience, RV travel aligns with the growing awareness of the health benefits associated with outdoor activities during the winter months. Experts emphasize that winter recreation can improve physical and mental health by boosting immunity, enhancing mood, increasing physical activity, and improving sleep quality.
Spokesperson Geraci highlighted these advantages, stating that winter RV travel not only strengthens family bonds but also promotes well-being. This holiday season, millions of Americans are embracing the joy of winter RV travel and reaping the rewards of outdoor recreation,” she said.
With a $140 billion market value, the RV industry remains a significant economic force. The RVIA, headquartered in Washington, D.C., and Elkhart, Indiana, plays a key role in supporting the industry, which accounts for 98% of RV production in the United States and 60% worldwide.
