Yorkshire Emerges as Top UK Tourist Destination for 2023, Boosting Staycation Trend

Yorkshire has been named the most desirable UK tourist destination for 2023, outshining Cornwall and the Scottish Highlands.

A recent poll of 2,000 adults showed that 50% chose staycations this year due to the cost of living, with Yorkshire’s scenic coastal towns and rolling dales contributing to its appeal. Cornwall, the Scottish Highlands, Cumbria, and Northumberland were other popular UK destinations, according to a report by The Yorkshire Post.

Interestingly, 47% of respondents sought lesser-known locations like Norfolk, Ayrshire, and Kent, drawn by lower costs (53%), meal booking flexibility (29%), and avoiding overcrowded areas (65%). Countryside B&Bs appealed to 30% of respondents, while 28% preferred visiting lakes and mountains.

Sykes Holiday Cottages’ research, conducted following their annual Staycation Index Report, found that proximity to beaches, reliable Wi-Fi, and spacious outdoor areas were top priorities when renting a holiday home. Graham Donoghue, CEO, noted that staycations remained popular due to affordability and the variety of beautiful regions the UK offers.

The study also revealed that 52% of respondents were unlikely to book a trip abroad this year due to budget constraints. As a result, half planned to book a staycation, with an average of three trips. Moreover, 42% hoped to secure a last-minute UK break for a good deal, while 52% aimed to book their holiday in advance for similar reasons.

Travel-wise, 37% intended to take multiple shorter trips throughout the year to balance costs, while 51% anticipated fewer breaks due to financial pressures.

The OnePoll study found that 43% of holiday planners expected their main trip to be in the UK, predicting an average spend of £1,200, with budgets allocated to accommodation (30%), travel (16%), dining out (13%), and activities (9%).

The outdoor recreation industry is poised to benefit from this staycation trend, with camping, hiking, and water sports likely to see increased interest. This presents an opportunity for businesses in the outdoor recreation sector to cater to the unique interests of staycationers and capitalize on the growing demand for local experiences.

The wider tourism industry can also profit from this shift by promoting lesser-known destinations, supporting local economies, and offering exclusive deals for budget-conscious travelers. By adapting to the evolving preferences of UK holidaymakers, the tourism industry can ensure continued growth and resilience.
