Belfast City Council received an outline planning application for new tourism facilities at Cavehill Country Park. The proposed development includes self-catering accommodations, glamping pods, a visitor center, expanded parking facilities, and associated site works.
The application site spans approximately 2.3 acres of open countryside, located adjacent to a small car park. The location offers panoramic views of Belfast to the south, with Cavehill forming a natural backdrop to the north and east.
The proposed visitor center will also serve as an informational hub, highlighting the park’s ecological heritage, archaeological significance, and extensive walking trail network.
The accommodations are designed to attract a diverse range of visitors, from families seeking outdoor adventures to eco-tourists. According to the planning application, these facilities are expected to increase the accessibility and convenience of overnight stays, encouraging visitors to spend more time exploring the park and its surroundings.
A design and access statement submitted with the application also emphasized the economic benefits of the project. It stated that tourists who stay overnight are more likely to spend on local amenities, and supporting businesses in the area.
“Tourists who stay overnight are more likely to spend on local amenities, supporting businesses in nearby areas such as Glengormley, as well as contributing to the broader economy of Belfast,” the proposal stated, as reported by News Letter.
Tourism infrastructure, particularly near natural assets like public parks, plays a critical role in supporting local economies. The application notes that the development could generate additional revenue for businesses and create jobs in sectors such as hospitality, outdoor recreation, and park services.
Cavehill Country Park is a popular destination for both local residents and international visitors, known for its scenic views, historical landmarks, and extensive trails.
