An independent caravan and camping park in Leicestershire has secured funding to support its expansion into the glamping market, presenting a case study in diversification and development for operators in the outdoor hospitality industry.
The Grange, a site founded by John and Katie Houghton following a 630-mile trek along the Southwest Coastal Path, has received a £25,000 Start Up Loan through First Enterprise, part of the British Business Bank initiative.
According to a report by Insider Media, the funding is being used to expand their offerings with six new hard standing pitches, set to open in May 2025, and introduce a yurt-based glamping experience to the region.
For campground and holiday park owners, the development highlights the potential of utilizing non-traditional funding sources to finance site improvements and expand accommodation types.
This kind of strategic investment into diversified lodging aligns with broader trends in outdoor hospitality, where guest expectations are evolving to include experiences such as glamping that offer both comfort and a connection to nature.
Currently, The Grange offers 26 fully serviced hard standing pitches along with amenities including custom-built shower and toilet facilities, a shop offering local food and beverages, a garden centre, and a mountain-themed restaurant.
The planned additions not only expand capacity but also provide differentiated experiences that appeal to a growing glamping demographic.
“The loan helped us to fund the construction of new attractions and pitches on site, which will increase our visitor capacity and their experiences,” said the Houghtons in a statement. They also noted the role of First Enterprise in making the process accessible:
“At times it was challenging, but Inderpal from First Enterprise was always on hand to ease the way forward… always available at the end of the phone without any protracted phone connections.”
For business owners in the caravan, glamping, and RV sectors, this expansion offers a tangible example of how targeted investment and creative land use can support business growth.
With access to funds such as those offered by First Enterprise, operators may find new opportunities to evolve their offerings to meet changing market demands without relying solely on traditional bank lending.
According to Inderpal Singh, investment manager at First Enterprise, “It was a pleasure supporting John and Katie on their journey to expand The Grange. Their passion for creating a unique and welcoming camping experience is truly inspiring.”
As the glamping segment continues to grow in popularity across the UK and beyond, The Grange’s expansion underscores a broader movement among independent operators to enhance visitor experiences and improve site viability through innovation and targeted funding.
