The Glendale Holiday Park in Port Carlisle is set to undergo a major upgrade with new amenities. Cumberland Council has determined that the proposed development does not require an environmental impact assessment, clearing the way for further planning submissions.
The proposed project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art central facilities building designed to enhance visitor amenities. The building will feature an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium with changing facilities, reception area, site shop, sales suites, offices, and restrooms.
Additional upgrades include the creation of a caravan sales and display area, secure bicycle storage, expanded car parking, and a mix of landscaping features. To accommodate these changes, an existing leisure building will be replaced, and the site’s sewage treatment plant will be relocated and modernized.
However, the development will involve the removal of an on-site children’s playground to make space for the new showground area, reported Times & Star.
The site’s proximity to Hadrian’s Wall—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Roman Frontiers landmark—was also noted in the planning report. While the proposed showground lies near a protected section of the monument, the council indicated that any archaeological concerns could be addressed through appropriate pre-excavation surveys and investigations.
In November 2022, Glendale Holiday Park in Port Carlisle became part of Park Holidays UK following the acquisition of the site, along with Chevington Castle Holiday Park in Northumberland, from Callaly Leisure Ltd.
According to News & Star, the 300-acre site, featuring 380 pitches with approvals for additional static and touring pitches, boasts amenities such as a leisure suite, lakeside bar and bistro, mini golf course, tennis court, adventure play park, village store, and laundrette. This acquisition marked a strategic expansion for Park Holidays UK, which now operates over 50 holiday parks across the country.
This redevelopment aims to improve the overall guest experience while preserving the historical and environmental significance of the surrounding Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
