A planning application has been submitted to Carlow County Council seeking permission to develop a new glamping and camping facility in County Carlow, adding to the range of outdoor accommodation options available in the region.
The proposed development is located at Monaughrim, near the villages of Clonegal and Ardattin. According to planning documents lodged with the local authority, the project would combine glamping accommodations with traditional camping facilities and designated spaces for motorhomes.
If approved, the development would include four glamping pods, motorhome parking spaces, a tent pitching area, and a utility building containing shower, toilet, and kitchen facilities. The plans also provide for supporting infrastructure, including a plant room, a bored well, a secondary treatment system, and a soil polishing filter.
In addition, the proposal includes upgrades to an existing site entrance, the construction of a new entrance, and associated site works required to support the operation of the facility.
According to CarlowLive, the application was received by Carlow County Council this week and is currently at the pre-validation stage of the planning process. A planning decision is expected in mid-July.
The proposal reflects continued interest in developing alternative accommodation options within rural destinations across Ireland, where glamping, camping, and motorhome tourism have become increasingly visible segments of the broader tourism market. Smaller-scale developments such as the Monaughrim project can provide additional visitor capacity while offering travelers access to countryside locations and nearby villages.
For operators in the outdoor hospitality sector, the application highlights the ongoing demand for diversified accommodation offerings that cater to multiple customer segments within a single site.
Combining glamping pods, tent camping areas, and motorhome spaces allows operators to broaden their potential customer base while making use of shared infrastructure such as sanitation, utility, and reception facilities.
Industry professionals may also note the importance of planning for water supply, wastewater treatment, and site access improvements, all of which are key considerations during the planning and development stages of outdoor hospitality projects.
Should planning permission be granted, the Monaughrim development would add a new camping and glamping destination to County Carlow’s tourism accommodation inventory. The outcome of the application will be determined following the completion of the local authority’s review process, with a decision anticipated in mid-July.
