From Alpacas to Glamping: Phil Kerry’s Latest Venture Aims to Meet Outdoor Enthusiasts’ Needs

A Derbyshire, England landowner who faced opposition for his previous business ventures is now proposing a new venture that could provide a sustainable and viable option for outdoor recreation and hospitality in the area.

Phil Kerry, who owns a farm between Atlow and Hognaston, has applied to set up a glamping site with 10 large tents, 10 timber pods, and two lodges.

Kerry’s previous attempts at setting up a rabbit farm and an alpaca farm had been met with animal rights protests and had been rejected by the council. However, his glamping site proposal aims to address the needs of outdoor enthusiasts while also respecting the local environment and wildlife.

According to a report submitted by Willis & Co Chartered Town Planners, the proposed development would constitute a sustainable and viable use of land that could provide direct employment, indirect spend to support local businesses, and indirect visitor spend to help local shops and services.

The report also notes that the glamping site would offer high-quality tourism accommodation that meets the needs of current and future generations. The design of the site, including the shepherd huts and timber pods, is said to be sympathetic to the character of the area, and the scale of the proposal is appropriate for the setting.

The proposed development is expected to have minimal disruption to local residents and neighbors due to the distance from residential properties. Additionally, the glamping site is easily accessible by bike and public transportation, with a number of bike shelters planned for the site.

If approved, the glamping site could provide a valuable addition to outdoor recreation and hospitality in the area, offering visitors a unique and sustainable experience while also contributing to the local economy. A decision on the proposal is expected to be made by the Derbyshire Dales District Council in the coming months.
