Couple Appeals Proposed Bradworthy Glamping Pods Following Initial Rejection

Mr. and Mrs. Whelan launched an appeal against Torridge District Council’s refusal of their planning application to install two glamping pods on land at Higher Millfield, Mill Road, Bradworthy. The council’s original decision cited the proposal’s failure to relate to an established recreational base and lack of significant demonstrated economic benefits to the wider area.

In their appeal, the Whelans highlighted that the proposed glamping pods are designed to offer accessible accommodation for people with disabilities. This new element of the appeal was not mentioned in the original application, Bradworthy Parish Council noted.

According to an article published by Bude Stratton Post, the parish council stated, “As far as the Parish Council can see the only mention of catering for disabilities in the original application was with the disabled access via ramps into the glamping pods. Although these ramps do not appear to be clearly shown on the drawings that accompanied the original application.”

The council’s decision further emphasized that the application would not improve facilities or diversify the range or quality of existing tourism accommodation. Additionally, the applicants had not engaged with the council prior to submitting their application.

The proposal highlights the importance of aligning developments with recreational and economic benefits to ensure a strong case for approval. By incorporating features that enhance the area’s tourism appeal—such as innovative facilities or diverse accommodation options—developers can demonstrate their project’s value to the community and meet council expectations.

Additionally, consulting with local authorities early in the planning process with a thoroughly outlined proposal is essential. This approach enables developers to identify potential issues, address local concerns, and align their plans with regional priorities.
