In a recent development near Hay-on-Wye, a planning application to expand Borders Hideaway Holiday Park has been withdrawn. The proposal, submitted by James Lloyd-Jones of Hillandale Caravan Parks in April, sought to add 31 more caravans to the existing site in Clyro, which already offers 48 static caravans, 18 touring caravan pitches, and 18 seasonal pitches.

The withdrawal comes after opposition from the local community and concerns raised about the potential impact on the surrounding landscape. According to an article published by Powys County Times, local county councilor James Gibson-Watt, who also serves as the Powys council leader, called for the application to be reviewed by the council’s planning committee.

Gibson-Watt emphasized the need for a site visit , stating, “This is a very prominent location in an elevated position on steeply sloping ground, proposing to expand a facility with a controversial planning history.”

He emphasized that for members of the planning committee to fully understand the application and its potential impact, it would be “highly desirable” for them to conduct a site visit before the application goes to committee.

The Clyro Community Council unanimously objected to the application, citing concerns that it contradicted the Powys Local Development Plan (LDP).

“It is the unanimous view of the Clyro Community Council that this application be rejected. It will have an unacceptable adverse effect on the valued characteristics and qualities of the landscape and is not appropriate and sensitive in terms of siting and scale,” the council said.

The Borders Hideaway Holiday Park’s proposal illustrates the importance of consulting with local residents and aligning projects with local ordinances. Communicating with the community helps address concerns in the development plans.

Additionally, adhering to local regulations, such as the Powys Local Development Plan, ensures that projects align with local rules. This approach not only mitigates opposition but also fosters cooperation between developers and the community.
