Caravan and Motorhome Club Invests £1 Million in Totnes Campsite Transformation: Year-Round Operation to Boost Local Economy

The Caravan and Motorhome Club is investing £1 million to transform its Steamer Quay Club Campsite in Totnes, marking a significant milestone in the site’s 50-year history. This ambitious redevelopment project, slated for completion on October 1, will modernize the facility and extend its operational calendar to year-round service, a move expected to inject over £1.3 million annually into the local economy according to an article by South Hams Gazette.

The extensive renovations at Steamer Quay, which has been under the Club’s management since 1970, will introduce 46 new non-awning serviced pitches, providing enhanced comfort and convenience for visitors. The existing shower and toilet block will undergo a complete refurbishment, ensuring modern amenities for campers. In a nod to the growing trend of eco-friendly travel, new electric vehicle charging points will be installed, catering to the increasing number of environmentally conscious travelers.

On July 25, the Mayor of Totnes, Cllr Emily Price, visited the campsite to assess the ongoing work. She met with Paul Barnes, the Club’s Head of Estates, who provided insights into the project’s scope and potential impact on the local community. The mayor’s visit underscored the significance of this investment for Totnes, a town known for its rich history and vibrant cultural scene.

Paul Barnes emphasized the importance of balancing the needs of holidaymakers with those of the local community. He expressed enthusiasm about the campsite’s transition to year-round operation, viewing it as a substantial contribution to the local economy.

“After so many years working with the council at Steamer Quay, we were pleased to win the tender for the further lease of the campsite and for securing planning for its redevelopment. It is important that both holidaymakers and local communities benefit from our Club campsites. By investing in Steamer Quay, which is a very popular campsite and will now be open all year round, we are happy to contribute further to the local economy,” Barnes said.

Cllr Price echoed this optimism, highlighting the potential boost to Totnes’ economy, particularly for its independent businesses. She noted that overnight visitors play a crucial role in supporting the town’s diverse array of shops, attractions, and eateries. The mayor commented, “We’re really looking forward to the Steamer Quay Club campsite reopening this autumn and bringing a welcome boost for Totnes at what is a challenging time for our businesses. Overnight visitors have a significant positive impact on our local economy and especially on the health of our night-time economy.”

“They shop in our independent stores on the high street, visit our local attractions like the museum, and enjoy our fantastic locally-produced food and drink in our cafes, bars, and restaurants, which will benefit both our high street businesses and the local makers and many local producers who supply them. A thriving high street helps us to build resilience for our community and our visitors play a crucial role in that story,” Price added.

The redevelopment of Steamer Quay Club Campsite is not just about physical improvements; it’s part of a broader strategy to enhance the visitor experience in Totnes. Lucy Ferrier, Marketing and Communications Manager for Visit Totnes, described the campsite’s location as ideal for exploring the town and its surroundings.

She emphasized the ease with which visitors can access Totnes’ bustling high street, cultural attractions, and natural beauty, all within a short walk from the campsite. Ferrier added, “You could not find a more perfect site to stay and explore than Steamer Quay. With riverside walks straight from the door and our bustling high street with shops, bars, cafes, cinema, museums, market and more, just a flat 10-minute walk away, you can pitch up and then spend the week exploring the town and local area by foot, bike, boat, or bus. We can’t wait to welcome Caravan and Motorhome Club members and guests to Totnes once again and we’re delighted we can now extend this welcome all-year round.

This project comes at a time when RV and motorhome tourism in the UK is experiencing significant growth. The Caravan and Motorhome Club’s investment in Steamer Quay Club Campsite reflects this trend, catering to an increasing demand for high-quality, year-round camping facilities. The addition of EV charging points, in particular, aligns with the shift towards more sustainable travel options.

The campsite’s picturesque setting, with its pastoral views and proximity to the town center, has long been a draw for visitors. The redevelopment aims to enhance these natural advantages while providing modern amenities that today’s travelers expect. This balance of nature and comfort is likely to appeal to a broad range of campers, from seasoned motorhome enthusiasts to families seeking a convenient base for exploring South Devon.

The economic impact of the redeveloped campsite is expected to be substantial. With year-round operation, Steamer Quay Club Campsite will be able to attract visitors during traditionally quieter periods, potentially helping to stabilize seasonal fluctuations in local tourism. This consistent flow of visitors could provide a welcome boost to Totnes’ businesses, particularly during off-peak seasons.

For the Caravan and Motorhome Club, this investment represents a significant commitment to the future of camping in the region. The Club’s long-standing relationship with South Hams District Council, which owns the site, has been reinforced by this project. The recent granting of a 40-year lease for the campsite underscores the Club’s long-term vision for Steamer Quay Club Campsite and its role in the local community.

As the reopening date approaches, anticipation is building among both local businesses and potential visitors. The redeveloped Steamer Quay Club Campsite is poised to become a cornerstone of Totnes’ tourism infrastructure, offering a blend of modern amenities and easy access to the town’s unique attractions. From riverside walks to exploring local markets, visitors will have a comfortable and convenient base from which to experience all that Totnes and the surrounding area have to offer. Bookings are now open with a £5 deposit available until September 30, 2024.
