Dunham Leisure Ltd recently revealed its proposal to add up to 240 new static caravans to the South Meadows Caravan Park in Belford, United Kingdom prompting mixed reactions from local residents.
According to a report by the Northumberland Gazette, the proposed expansion would take place on the west side of the existing site while maintaining the current park boundaries.
The plans call for a reconfiguration of the existing static caravan pitches to create an internal access road that leads to the new site. Public access and environmental considerations feature prominently in the proposal, with Dunham Leisure assuring that the existing public right of way would remain unaffected.
To minimize visual impact, landscape buffer planting would be implemented to screen views into the park. Furthermore, the proposal includes the creation of a pond or wetland area to encourage local biodiversity and emphasizes habitat creation in the development.
Sustainable transportation options are also part of the plan, with parking spaces for cars, bicycle racks, and electric vehicle charging points included in the expansion. These provisions showcase the park’s commitment to environmentally-friendly practices.
Cllr Guy Renner-Thompson, a Bamburgh division member on Northumberland County Council, voiced concerns regarding the scale of the proposed expansion.
“240 static caravans is a significant addition for a small village like Belford. I will be listening to the views of the community carefully and urge anyone to get in touch with me with any questions or concerns,” he said.
South Meadows Caravan Park has a strong reputation, having been awarded the AA’s ‘Campsite of the Year, North East England’ title for 2022/23. The proposed expansion could potentially bolster its standing in the outdoor hospitality industry, attracting more visitors to the region.
