Tenerife’s Punta del Hidalgo Campsite Reopens Following January 2025 Rehabilitation Project

The Punta del Hidalgo Campsite in Tenerife has completed a series of upgrades as part of a rehabilitation project launched in January 2025, with local officials unveiling the improvements ahead of the summer travel season. The project aims to enhance safety, accessibility, and operations at what municipal officials describe as the island’s only public campsite.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez and Councillor for Works Ángel Chinea visited the facility this week to present the completed improvements and outline changes that will affect campers using the site throughout the year.

The rehabilitation included structural work on the main building, the addition of new guest amenities, and operational changes designed to modernize the campsite’s management.

Gutiérrez said the renovations followed a temporary closure of the campsite and focused on improving conditions for both visitors and staff while addressing operational needs identified during the planning process.

“After temporarily closing the site for renovations, the focus was on enhancing safety for users and staff, as well as improving management,” Gutiérrez told TenerifeWeekly, noting that many of the upgrades were informed by feedback from campers.

Among the completed improvements are the restoration of the site’s main building, a new children’s play area, outdoor picnic spaces, laundry facilities, and upgraded accessible restrooms. The project also introduced the municipality’s first restroom designed specifically for people with ostomies, developed in collaboration with the Ostomised Association of the Canary Islands (AOCAN).

The campsite has also introduced a new online platform that allows guests to make reservations and complete payments digitally. In addition to the technology upgrade, the facility will now operate throughout the year rather than limiting access to weekends and holidays, expanding availability for both residents and visitors.

Chinea said the rehabilitation project was developed following technical assessments and discussions with camping associations to identify opportunities for improvement.

“The project stemmed from technical reviews and discussions with camping associations to identify areas for improvement. Though visitor satisfaction was previously high, they felt it was time to enhance the overall experience,” Chinea said.

Additional work included replacing much of the site’s outdoor furniture with materials better suited to withstand the corrosive effects of the coastal environment. Aromatic plants were also added near the adjacent Teidagua treatment plant as part of the landscaping improvements.

Municipal officials said the next phase of development will include the construction of a solarium, which is expected to open in the coming months.

The Punta del Hidalgo Campsite occupies approximately 24,000 square meters and offers 78 camping plots with capacity for about 300 guests. The site includes electrical hookups, bathrooms, showers, water access points, and parking for approximately 89 vehicles, with accessibility features incorporated throughout the facility.

For campground and outdoor hospitality operators, the redevelopment reflects several trends shaping public and private camping destinations, including investments in digital booking systems, expanded accessibility features, year-round operations, and infrastructure designed to improve guest experience while reducing maintenance demands in challenging environments.

These types of upgrades can help operators respond to evolving traveler expectations while extending the operating season and improving operational efficiency.
