Waterways Ireland Looking Into Glamping Sites, EV Charging

Waterways Ireland is exploring the possibility of making a portion of its land accessible for camping, glamping, motorhome infrastructure, and electric vehicle charging.

According to its website, Waterways Ireland, one of the six North/South Implementation Bodies established under the British-Irish Agreement of 1998, is a cross-border navigational authority responsible for the management, maintenance, development, and promotion of over 1000 km of inland navigable waterways, principally for recreational purposes.

Waterways Ireland has gone to tender for a feasibility study that will look at the appropriateness and scale of the potential campsite.

Waterways Ireland holds significant property assets that extend across the waterways network of 1000km, including Leitrim.

The provision of Glamping and or Motorhome infrastructure along the inland waterways offers the potential to attract increased and diverse users to the waterways environment to experience both on-water and off-water recreational activities, including walking and cycling along our Greenway and Blueway routes,” the tender states.

The results of the study will assist Waterways Ireland in deciding on future capital investments as well as works that will be carried out across their network.

The chosen contractor will be expected to evaluate thirty to fifty sites throughout Northern Ireland and Ireland, including the canals networks through Leitrim.
