In 2024, the German caravanning industry saw a notable achievement with 96,392 new registrations of caravans and motor caravans, as reported by the Caravaning Industry Association (CIVD).
Although this represents a slight dip in comparison to the record-setting years immediately following the pandemic, the figure remains strong, marking the third-best result in the sector’s history.
According to a press release, the growth in motor caravan registrations, which rose by 9.1 percent to 74,718 units, was particularly prominent.
On the other hand, caravan registrations saw a modest decrease of 1.0 percent, totaling 21,674 units.
While new vehicle registrations showed resilience, the sector faced challenges in production. A temporary oversupply in dealerships led to reduced vehicle output, with production numbers dropping by 16.4 percent in 2024, amounting to 118,641 units.
Exports also declined, with motor caravan exports falling by 9.1 percent and caravan exports decreasing by 26.7 percent.
These shifts in production were largely due to disruptions caused by the pandemic and geopolitical factors, including the war in Ukraine, which impacted global supply chains.
Despite these setbacks, the German caravanning industry still achieved a revenue of 15.1 billion euros in 2024. While this marks a 6 percent decline compared to the record figures of the previous year, it is still the second-best revenue result in the industry’s history.
“The results for new registrations and registrations of pre-owned vehicles show that the industry is on the right track despite all the adversity,” said Daniel Onggowinarso, managing director of the CIVD.
The strong performance in the pre-owned vehicle market, with a 5.5 percent increase in registrations, further underscores the enduring demand for caravanning.
Looking ahead to 2025, the industry remains optimistic. Onggowinarso noted that while uncertainties, including the upcoming general election and economic conditions, may pose challenges, consumer interest in caravanning remains robust.
“Germans’ enthusiasm for caravanning remains unbroken,” he added, highlighting the diverse range of products and the expected excitement surrounding upcoming caravanning trade fairs.
