First Camp Group Expands into Germany’s North Sea Coast with Insel Camping Borkum Acquisition

First Camp Group has expanded its footprint in Germany with the acquisition of Insel Camping Borkum, a campground on Germany’s North Sea coast, effective July 9, 2026. The transaction, completed together with the company’s strategic partner lodgyslife, brings the group’s portfolio to 92 destinations overall and nine locations in Germany.

The acquisition marks First Camp Group’s first property on Germany’s North Sea coast, adding a destination on Borkum, the largest of the East Frisian Islands. The island is known for approximately 26 kilometers of sandy beaches, dune landscapes, and its location within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wadden Sea. As a recognized North Sea spa resort, Borkum has long attracted visitors seeking nature-based tourism and coastal vacations.

Insel Camping Borkum operates seasonally and is located near both the town center and the beach. The property includes approximately 118 touring pitches, 71 rental caravans, 195 long-stay and seasonal pitches, and 21 tent pitches.

On-site amenities also include a restaurant and an island market operated by long-standing partners, along with modern guest facilities. According to the company, the campground has established a strong base of returning visitors over the years.

According to a press release, the acquisition continues First Camp Group’s expansion strategy in the German market, where the company has steadily increased its presence through acquisitions. Germany remains one of Europe’s largest camping markets, with domestic and international demand supporting continued investment in campgrounds, holiday parks, and outdoor accommodations.

For campground and holiday park operators, the transaction reflects the ongoing consolidation occurring across the European outdoor hospitality sector, where larger operators continue to expand regional networks while seeking established destinations with loyal customer bases and opportunities for long-term growth.

Commenting on the acquisition, Johan Söör, CEO of the First Camp Group, and Julia Harnischfeger, Managing Director of First Camp in the DACH region, said: “We are delighted to now have a presence in northern Germany as well. Inselcamping Borkum is unique in terms of its location and character. Over the past decades, Rolf Fischer and his team have created a destination that offers guests an exceptional holiday experience. He deserves great respect for this. We will continue to develop what has been achieved so far with great care.”

Rolf Fischer, the longtime owner of Insel Camping Borkum, said the transition was guided by finding an operator capable of maintaining the property’s identity while continuing its development.

“Insel Camping Borkum has grown alongside our family over many years and is very close to our hearts. This made it all the more important to me to find a buyer and operator who understands the unique character of this place, preserves its values and develops the campsite with foresight – in the interests of our guests and our team. I am convinced that Insel Camping Borkum has a successful future ahead of it under First Camp’s management, and I look forward to remaining actively involved until the end of the 2026 season,” Fischer said.

Following the acquisition, First Camp Group now operates 92 destinations across Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, and Switzerland under multiple hospitality brands. The company said its portfolio includes more than 24,000 caravan and motorhome pitches and more than 4,000 cabins.

Since 2017, the group has acquired more than 70 destinations as part of a growth strategy focused on digitalization, guest satisfaction, sustainability, and geographic expansion across Europe’s outdoor hospitality market.
