German Motorhome Brand Malibu’s Future Plans

German motorhome brand Malibu, a subsidiary of the Carthago Group, is charting a course for the future of the recreational vehicle (RV) industry. With a history spanning 40 years, Malibu is leveraging its experience to create innovative, high-quality, and highly technical leisure vehicles for the modern consumer.

The company was founded by Karl-Heinz Schuler, a legend in the motorhome industry, whose passion for adventure continues to drive the brand’s vision.

Malibu is part of the Carthago Group, an owner-managed family business that values independence. This independence was solidified in 2014 with the establishment of the Carthago Family Foundation, ensuring the company’s ability to implement ideas quickly, think innovatively, and stay true to its Carthago Premium DNA for years to come.

The company’s growth has been marked by significant milestones. In 1979, Schuler established his own motorhome brand, Carthago, with the first vehicles produced under the model designation: Malibu. By 1985, the company had grown rapidly, specializing in VW van conversions. By 1991, Malibu models were being produced on the VW T4 chassis, available in different lengths and layouts.

In 2013, Malibu relaunched its van, a modern interpretation of the company’s first campervan. This coincided with the move to a new purpose-built headquarters and production facility in Aulendorf, Germany. Two years later, Malibu introduced a new range of A-class and coach-built motorhomes at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf.

These models were an instant success, earning the title of ‘New Product of the Year’ by AutoBild Reisemobil magazine. The Malibu van has since won ‘Motorhome of the Year’ in Promobil magazine’s readers’ poll four years in a row.

Malibu offers a diverse range of A-Class and coach-built motorhomes in various lengths, both above and below 3.5 tons. These models have been constantly developed to deliver luxurious accommodation in an attractive design that’s built to last and provide outstanding value retention.

All models feature fixed beds with the option of lengthways single beds or a queen size bed at the rear. An extra-large drop-down bed over the driver’s cabin can also be specified.

One of Malibu’s distinguishing features is its unique double floor that offers extra storage capability as well as added heat insulation properties. The company also boasts innovative kitchen and washroom designs that maximize space, giving owners more room to move and relax inside the cabin.

Quality and attention to detail are top priorities for all Malibu models. The company uses double connection technology to ensure that furniture is not only screwed together but also mortised for maximum stability and longevity.

Malibu’s commitment to quality dates back to its inception in 1979. The company’s founder, Karl-Heinz Schuler, instilled a passion for doing things ‘better’ that is still evident in Malibu’s A-Class and coach-built motorhomes today.

With brand-typical quality features and a unique added-value promise to offer “More Motorhome, More Value and More Holiday” enjoyment, Malibu continues to set new standards in the RV industry.

For those interested in learning more about Malibu and its offerings, the company offers a free e-newsletter that provides regular updates about Malibu, including new model highlights, interesting background information about the company, and up-to-date information on trade shows and events.

Malibu’s commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction positions it as a leader in the RV industry. As the company continues to build on its 40 years of experience, consumers can look forward to more high-quality, highly technical leisure vehicles that enhance their travel experiences.

The RV industry, including brands like Malibu, has a significant impact on related businesses and the economy as a whole.

In 2022, the German caravan industry generated an annual revenue of 14.03 billion euros, per the CIVD. The pre-owned vehicle sector and the accessories business also saw an increase, contributing 5.2 billion euros and 1.3 billion euros, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the United States, a study by the RV Industry Association states that the RV industry contributes an annual economic impact of $140 billion to the US economy, supporting nearly 680,000 jobs, and paying more than $48 billion in wages. This impact is seen in various sectors, including manufacturing, sales and service, campgrounds, and travel.

The growth and success of brands like Malibu not only contribute to this economic impact but also drive innovation and quality in the RV industry. As these companies continue to develop and introduce new models, they stimulate consumer interest and demand, which in turn supports a wide range of related businesses.
