Yukon Closes Pine Lake Campground After Bear Attack

Pine Lake Campground near Haines Junction has been closed following a bear attack that injured one person. The Yukon Conservation Officer Service announced the closure of the campground and nearby trails as a precautionary measure.

According to a Facebook post, the individual involved in the bear attack received medical attention. Conservation officers, along with Yukon Parks staff, are actively managing the situation to ensure public safety. Additionally, the advisory noted that bears matching the description of those involved have been located and removed from the area.

Pine Lake Campground and surrounding trails remain closed while officers are in the area. Conservation officers are asking the public to stay away from the area until further notice,” Yukon Conservation Officer Services stated.

Pine Lake Campground, located in the scenic region of Kluane, offers a tranquil camping experience. This campground is known for its excellent views of the Kluane and St. Elias mountains and its proximity to Haines Junction.

Pine Lake is also one of four road-accessible campgrounds with reservable campsites for the 2024 season. The campground features 42 sites, including six pull-through sites to accommodate larger vehicles.

The camping season runs from May 3 to September 30, with registration required to secure a spot, particularly on weekends. Additionally, the day-use area and boat launch are accessible and plowed during the winter, allowing for year-round activities. Local volunteers often maintain ski trails and an ice rink.

Another feature is the campground’s amenities and services. The campground includes unisex outhouses, at least one wheelchair-accessible facility, bear-proof garbage bins, blue bear-proof recycling bins, picnic tables, a cook shelter, and fire rings provided at each campsite.

The situation at Pine Lake Campground underscores the importance of prioritizing visitor safety and diverse facilities in future developments. Developing facilities such as bear-proof garbage bins and accessible amenities can significantly enhance visitor experience and security.
