Nova Scotia Provincial Parks to Hold Public Info Session for Carters Beach

Nova Scotia Provincial Parks (Canada) is inviting the public to learn about the province’s future plans for Carters Beach.

In a public event posted on Facebook, Nova Scotia Provincial Parks said that the province intends to designate Carters Beach as a provincial park.

“While the designation process continues, a management plan for the park is being developed. This plan will outline value statements and guide future management activities,” the post indicated.

The in-person public information session will be held on November 26, 2022, at the West Queens Recreation Centre, 70 Riverhead Road, Port Mouton, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.

Carters Beach’s clear turquoise water and white powdery sand draw visitors from all over the province. However, each year, issues arise due to insufficient parking and amenities.

The Region of Queens has made efforts in the past to provide garbage pick-up and washrooms, but the beach is a provincial responsibility.

Some have proposed closing Carters Beach to the public and designating it as a nature reserve to protect the fragile ecosystem.

Last April, Nova Scotia Premier Iain Rankin announced that 61 provincial-owned properties would be protected and designated as wilderness areas and nature reserves. The aim is that the additional sites would support the government’s new 14% land protection goal.

The initiative will help protect Nova Scotia’s unique biodiversity and habitats for mainland moose, Atlantic salmon, migratory birds, and other species. Other proposed areas include Upper Tantallon Provincial Park (Jerry Lawrence Provincial Park addition), Halifax Regional Municipality, and Port La Tour Provincial Park, Shelburne County.

Carters Beach features over 95 hectares of coastal dune, forested dune, salt marsh, and offshore islands, including Spectacle Island and Jackies Island.

The public information session will help the province decide to move forward with the transition of Carters Beach to a provincial park.

This is a developing story. Modern Campground will closely monitor the latest updates on Carter Beach Provincial Park.
