The Canadian government is strengthening tourism across British Columbia’s Thompson Okanagan region with an investment of CA$727,500. Through the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan) and its Tourism Growth Program, this funding aims to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities, attract visitors, and foster economic growth across the region’s communities.
Four local organizations will receive a portion of the funding to undertake projects that highlight the area’s natural beauty and historical significance while supporting sustainable tourism.
The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Foundation is set to receive CA$250,000 to restore the historic Adra Tunnel on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail in Naramata. Originally constructed as part of the railway, the tunnel will be revitalized to accommodate hikers and cyclists.
The Silver Star Freestyle Club has been awarded CA$250,000 to establish a freestyle ski and snowboard training park at SilverStar Mountain Resort in Vernon. This facility will feature specialized equipment, including a landing airbag and varied terrain features, catering to athletes of all skill levels. The project aims to bolster the resort’s standing as a destination for year-round activities.
Additional investments include CA$65,000 for the Hunters Range Snowmobile Association to enhance its grooming equipment and trail infrastructure in Enderby, improving the experience for snowmobilers. The Wine Growers British Columbia Society will also receive CA$162,500 to develop a user-friendly trip-planning resource on its website, further supporting the region’s tourism offerings.
According to the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, minister of emergency preparedness and minister responsible for PacifiCan, these projects represent the government’s commitment to enhancing tourism in British Columbia.
“The Thompson Okanagan is home to world-class tourism attractions with ambitious plans to welcome visitors from all corners of British Columbia, Canada, and beyond. PacifiCan is here to support these organizations as they create memorable experiences and seize growth opportunities. These projects showcase our region’s natural beauty and rich history while strengthening the local economy and creating good jobs here in our communities,” Sajjan stated in a press release.
