Port Alberni Weighs Proposal For New Campground to Boost City Revenue, Tourism

Port Alberni city council in British Columbia (BC) is considering a proposal to generate additional revenue by constructing a campground in the city’s lands, according to an Alberni Valley News report. However, the council’s response to the proposal was mixed.

Alberni Valley showcases recreational activities for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. The region is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, ranging from lush forests and scenic trails to majestic mountains and serene lakes. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the vast network of trails that weave through the valley, providing access to stunning vistas and the tranquility of nature. For those drawn to water, the Alberni Valley boasts opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing in its pristine rivers and lakes, making it a perfect destination for water sports aficionados.

Councillor Todd Patola has proposed a motion to look into the feasibility of constructing a campground on city-owned property. This proposal was made during a council meeting on Monday, February 26, highlighting a potential avenue for boosting the city’s tourism sector. Port Alberni allocates $100,000 annually towards tourism promotion, yet accommodations within the city are limited.

“All of them require some form of extended travel to get to the community’s centre,” Councillor Patola said, as quoted in the report.

While there are several hotels and campgrounds near the city, none are located within its boundaries, necessitating travel for tourists wishing to explore the city’s center. The city acquired the property in 2015, and despite issuing a request for proposals in 2016, the site still needs to be developed.

However, concerns were raised about the chosen location and the city’s capacity to undertake such a project amidst other ongoing initiatives, including the campground plan not in the strategic plan of the Port Alberni city council.

“For that reason, I won’t support moving on it today. That said, I would like to see this brought to our next strategic planning review because I do think there’s a lot of value in exploring the potential,” Port Alberni Mayor Sharie Minions said.

BC offers a diverse array of activities set against the backdrop of some of Canada’s most stunning natural landscapes. Whether you’re looking to set up camp under the stars in designated frontcountry sites or venture into the wilderness for a multiday backcountry trek.

In the winter months, British Columbia’s parks transform into a snowy wonderland, offering a variety of activities for winter sports enthusiasts. Skiing and snowboarding are popular in parks that feature alpine terrain and ski resorts.
