ORCBC Announces Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC Grant Program Application

The Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC) announced the initiation of the Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC grant program. This new initiative aims to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities and promote environmental stewardship throughout the province.

“We are thrilled to launch the Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC grant program and provide vital support to organizations and initiatives that share our passion for outdoor recreation and the protection of natural spaces,” Louise Pedersen, executive director of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC, said in a press release

ORCBC, a voice advocating for the outdoor recreation community, has established this program to bolster the efforts of local communities and volunteer organizations. The initiative is designed to support projects that improve the accessibility and quality of outdoor recreational activities, which are crucial for the health and well-being of British Columbians.

“By investing in access, inclusivity, education, and stewardship, we aim to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy and appreciate the natural beauty of British Columbia,” Pedersen said.

This strategic move was facilitated by a CA$10 million one-time grant from the Province of BC in May 2023, which established the Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC. The income generated by this endowment will continually support the grant program, securing long-term funding for future projects.

The program will distribute funds across three primary areas: enhancing outdoor access and infrastructure, advancing stewardship and education, and promoting inclusive participation. These focus areas aim to maintain and upgrade essential recreation infrastructure like trails and boat launches, foster responsible outdoor engagement, and ensure that outdoor activities are accessible to a diverse range of participants.

Funding from the program is available to a variety of groups, including charities, non-profits, local governments, and Indigenous governments. The grants offered will vary in size, depending on the scope and impact of the projects.

Wayne Mercer, chair of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC, reiterated the importance of the program. Mercer pointed out that the grant would help reinforce the infrastructure that supports outdoor recreation and is largely maintained by volunteers.

Interested organizations are encouraged to review the detailed eligibility criteria and application guidelines. This resource offers comprehensive information to assist applicants in submitting proposals that align with the council’s objectives. The grant program is now accepting applications from March 28 to April 30.
