Marine parks in British Columbia remain a top destination for visitors, blending natural beauty with outdoor adventure. In April 2024, BC Parks conducted research interviews to understand visitors’ motivations and experiences, offering insight into what draws people to these coastal parks and how they plan their trips.

According to a press release, visitors often express admiration for the landscapes and a sense of responsibility to protect them. “We are very lucky that we have these places to represent the B.C. coast. They are special and we must ensure they keep that way,” one participant explained.

Fees do not appear to deter visitors, with most participants noting that BC Parks’ marine park fees have little impact on their decision-making. Many believe the fees are “reasonable” and view them as a contribution to the maintenance of park amenities.

“Maybe it’s time to have these things pay for themselves,” one visitor said.

For boaters, the cost of BC Parks’ mooring buoys is considered modest compared to the overall expenses of boat ownership, including maintenance and marina fees.

While some parks can get busy, this does not affect visitors’ enjoyment. Preferences vary, with some seeking solitude and others enjoying social interaction. “I don’t like the noise and disruption of powerboaters,” one visitor shared, noting a preference for peaceful, remote experiences away from crowds.

To avoid busy periods, some visitors plan their trips during off-peak times or anchor in less crowded areas, seeking quiet moments in nature where wildlife can be observed. “I don’t like the noise and disruption of powerboaters. It’s no better than frontcountry camping with the generators and RVs,” a research participant indicated.

Conversely, others enjoy the social aspect of marine parks, traveling in groups and organizing gatherings. “Boaters are very social and love talking about their boats,” noted one visitor.

Safety and comfort are top priorities for visitors, who plan their trips, checking weather conditions and ensuring they have the necessary equipment. “You have to be super aware because it is a hostile environment and things change really, really fast,” one participant emphasized.
