Nanaimo Region Launches Survey for Parks and Trails Development

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is preparing a Parks and Trails strategy that will determine the direction for developing its community and regional trails and parks for the next decade.

The district’s regional office launched a survey to determine the strategy’s vision based on the community values for trails and parks.

It will guide current strategies for land acquisition planning, clarify the RDN’s core park services, and promote sustainability of the parks and trails staffing, resources, and operations.

Access to outdoor recreation contributes to our physical and mental well-being, so it is important that residents take the opportunity to provide their feedback,” said RDN Chair Tyler Brown.

“Their input helps guide the future of our many parks and trails, from local greenspaces and playgrounds that make our communities more vibrant to larger regional parks that provide a wide range of outdoor experiences for residents and visitors alike.”

The survey builds upon the initial public engagement in December 2019 and in January 2020 to get a better understanding of what residents consider in the current trails and parks and what they would like to expect in the near future.

In the second engagement phase, RDN asks the residents to review the draft vision goals and actions and take a survey online on or before April 28.

Regional parks and trail systems comprise more than 2050 acres of land. It includes 12 regional parks, one regional conservation area, and 78 kilometers of trails across ten regional trail systems.

The community parks and trails system includes over 750 hectares of land with over 212 community parks and trails.
