Canada Invests Over $2 Million to Boost Outdoor Tourism Across British Columbia’s Southern Interior

The Canadian government is making strategic investments in tourism across British Columbia’s Southern Interior, aiming to strengthen outdoor recreation, local economies and attract more visitors.

Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, minister of emergency preparedness and minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan), announced over CA$2 million in funding through the Tourism Growth Program.

This initiative will support 14 organizations in the region, enhancing outdoor recreation, extending the tourism season, and promoting smaller communities as visitor destinations.

According to a press release, Rossland’s Black Jack Ski Club is one of the recipients, receiving CA$250,000 to improve accessibility at its day lodge, expand its equipment rental service, and install interpretive signage. These upgrades are designed to create a year-round attraction for outdoor enthusiasts, offering enhanced experiences for both locals and tourists.

Another major project involves the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance, which will receive CA$250,000 to upgrade a four-kilometer section of its hiking and biking trail network. This enhancement will connect Radium Hot Springs to Invermere, making the trail more accessible to individuals of all abilities and encouraging eco-tourism in the area.

The funding will also support planning efforts for a safer trail route linking Radium and Kootenay National Park, further solidifying the Columbia Valley’s reputation as an outdoor adventure hub.

The Niche Wine Company in West Kelowna is also leveraging CA$240,000 to transform its Indigenous-owned winery into a micro-resort. Plans include curated cultural experiences such as farm-to-table dining and elevated wine tastings that highlight the agricultural heritage of the Okanagan Valley.

Additional funding has been allocated to projects aimed at improving tourism infrastructure and experiences across the region. Revelstoke’s CAPOW Guiding will receive CA$250,000 to enhance its backcountry hiking tours, while the City of Kelowna will invest CA$174,000 in expanding air service at its international airport to boost off-season travel.

Kartplex in Oliver plans to use its CA$185,000 grant to upgrade its race-karting facilities with new tracks, solar lighting, and training simulators.

Trail networks and outdoor facilities are also seeing significant improvements through this funding. The Shuswap Trail Alliance will invest CA$190,731 to enhance mountain biking and hiking trails, while smaller projects, such as Sparwood Trails Alliance’s CA$39,000 grant and Trails to the Boundary Society’s CA$18,950 award, will improve accessibility and guided tour offerings.
