The BC Lodging and Campgrounds Association (BCLCA) is once again hosting its annual online auction to support the Care Camps Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to helping children with cancer experience the joys of camping.
The auction, running April 15 to May 20, is part of BCLCA’s ongoing efforts to raise funds and awareness for this cause. Over the past four years, nearly CA$15,000 has been raised through the auction, alongside donations and other fundraising events.
In an exclusive email interview, BCLCA Executive Director Joss Penny underscored the organization’s efforts to raise funds for the foundation.
Penny highlighted that the auction is a key component of BCLCA’s strategy to engage the community and harness the support of the camping sector and industry partners.
“We have been passionate about raising funds for this great cause for five years now,” Penny told Modern Campground. “It is with the generous help of the camping sector and industry partners that makes this auction a success year after year.”
The funds raised are crucial for the Care Camps Foundation, which organizes specialized oncology camps for children battling cancer. These camps provide a respite where children can escape the rigors of their treatment and enjoy being kids. “We all know that camping helps reset our biological clocks, imagine what a week can do for a child facing cancer treatments,” Penny added.
The association’s commitment extends beyond just fundraising. BCLCA is actively involved in promoting the benefits of these camps and the positive impact they have on children’s lives.
Gwynn Sullivan, executive director of Care Camps Foundation, emphasized the importance of these efforts.
“As Care Camps Foundation celebrates our 40th Anniversary this year, we continue to be honored with support from the BCLCA,” Sullivan said. The annual auction helps us fund pediatric oncology camps across Canada bringing lasting impact to children and families navigating a cancer journey. This experience becomes a lifeline of hope, joy, and support that sustains them throughout their life.”
Participation in the auction is open to all, and those unable to donate physical items can contribute gift cards from businesses such as MasterCard, Shell, Petro Canada, Walmart, Sephora, Google, and Amazon.
The initiative not only helps children with cancer but also provides a platform for campground owners and outdoor hospitality operators to contribute to a significant cause, enhancing their community profile and demonstrating their commitment to corporate social responsibility. This engagement also provides an opportunity for businesses to network and partner with other industry players, fostering a collaborative environment that benefits the entire campground industry.
The growing success of the auction is evident from the increase in funds raised each year. With the support of its members, suppliers, and local businesses, BCLCA ensures it provides substantial assistance to children with cancer.
The auction is spearheaded by BCLCA’s Darlene Oswald. Her dedication and passion for the cause contribute to its success. Oswald also says it is never too late to donate and those interested in contributing to the 2024 online auction can contact her at [email protected].
As the 2024 auction approaches, the BC Lodging and Campgrounds Association remains committed to its mission of supporting children in need and enhancing the well-being of the campground industry through charitable activities.
