3 Popular Backcountry Campgrounds Announce Reservation Openings in BC

British Columbia (B.C) Parks announced reservation dates for three of its most sought-after backcountry campgrounds. It allows campers to secure their spots well in advance, specifically four months before their planned arrival dates in three of its popular backcountry campgrounds, the Porcupine Campground, Kicking Horse Campground, and Frosty Creek Campground.

Starting February 21, reservations will be accepted for Porcupine Campground in Mount Assiniboine Park, marking a new chapter for one of British Columbia’s iconic outdoor destinations. This will be followed by the opening of reservations for Kicking Horse Campground and Frosty Creek Campground in E.C. Manning Park on February 28 and March 26.

The scheduled dates correspond with arrival times beginning June 21 for Porcupine Campground, June 28 for Kicking Horse, and July 26 for Frosty Creek, offering a structured camping experience for visitors.

The reservation system is designed to ensure that every hiker can look forward to a guaranteed camping spot upon arrival, addressing the uncertainty that often accompanies backcountry camping.

Furthermore, this system plays a crucial role in conservation efforts. By regulating the number of campers, BC Parks aims to reduce the wear and tear on natural habitats, preserving the area’s biodiversity and the integrity of trails, vegetation, and wildlife habitats.

Mount Assiniboine Park, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, is accessible solely via trails and is situated west of the B.C.-Alberta border in the Canadian Rockies. The park boasts five backcountry campgrounds with 75 campsites, offering a serene escape into nature. Porcupine Campground, with its 10 tent pads, serves as a midway haven for hikers trekking from the Sunshine Village trailhead in Banff National Park to Magog Lake in Mount Assiniboine Park.

Meanwhile, Frosty Creek Campground, with nine tent pads, is conveniently located 6.5 kilometers from the Lightning Lakes day-use area, making it an ideal spot for those seeking tranquility amidst nature.

Kicking Horse Campground, offering 15 tent pads, is positioned in picturesque sub-alpine meadows, 13.5 kilometres along the Heather Trail, providing a unique camping experience.

The introduction of reservations at Porcupine, Kicking Horse, and Frosty Creek campgrounds complements the existing reservation options for other backcountry sites within these parks. For more information about the reservation dates and B.C. parks, visitors can check here.
