Park Plans Put on Hold: Gloucester Council Looks into Expensive Changes

The Gloucester Holiday Park, owned by Midcoast Council and situated along the Gloucester River in New South Wales, Australia, has become a source of concern for local residents and business owners. According to an article by News of the area, overflowing garbage bins and dilapidated amenities, highlighting the park’s neglected state.

Midcoast Council has acknowledged the facility’s deteriorating condition and the need for substantial upgrades. The council initiated a call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from potential operators to manage the park through a lease agreement. Despite receiving several promising responses, Midcoast Council decided against proceeding with a formal tender process.

A council spokesperson explained the change in direction, stating, “Council has elected not to follow up the EOI campaign with a tender process as one of the key findings was the need to ascertain the level and cost of capital upgrades.” Midcoast Council now plans to conduct a high-level investigation into the necessary capital improvements and their associated costs before determining the next steps.

The Gloucester Business Chamber has been vocal about the need for immediate action. Chamber President Matt Clinch emphasized the park’s prime location and its potential for boosting tourism. He highlighted the economic impact of the park’s current state, noting the loss of valuable tourism revenue for the community. Clinch stressed the importance of investing in tourism to supplement the local economy, especially as traditional industries like mining and agriculture face increasing challenges.

As Midcoast Council investigates necessary capital upgrades, questions about financial transparency and budget allocation arise. The council’s decision to conduct a thorough assessment reflects the importance of accurate financial planning. The community awaits concrete plans for the park’s revival, recognizing its significance as a tourist attraction and economic asset.
