Lake Clearwater Enhances Wildfire Protection with New Sprinkler System Fire Break

In a proactive move to safeguard its residents and the natural surroundings, the Lake Clearwater community, in conjunction with the Ashburton District Council, has successfully installed a new sprinkler system designed to serve as a fire break.

This significant development comes as part of a comprehensive approach to managing wildfire risks in the area, renowned for its scenic beauty and biodiversity within the Hakatere Conservation Park.

The newly implemented sprinkler system spans 300 meters in length and 15 meters in width along the western side of the Lake Clearwater settlement. It is engineered to maintain a moist, green barrier capable of withstanding the onslaught of wildfires, particularly those propelled by the prevalent north-west winds in the region.

This strategic installation is the culmination of the Lake Clearwater Community Emergency Plan, a collaborative effort involving the Lake Clearwater Hutholders’ Association, Ashburton District Council, the Department of Conservation, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand

Each entity brought unique insights and resources to the table, ensuring the project’s alignment with both community needs and environmental standards, according to a press release by the Ashburton District Council.

The necessity for such a fire break system was highlighted by the seasonal population increase at Lake Clearwater, where the number of residents and visitors can swell to approximately 3,000 during the summer months. Activities associated with this influx, such as off-road driving, motorcycle riding, and outdoor cooking, significantly elevate the fire risk, necessitating robust preventive measures.

According to Don Geddes, Fire and Emergency Senior Advisor for Risk Reduction in Mid-South Canterbury, the choice of a sprinkler system was predicated on its minimal environmental impact and ease of maintenance, making it a preferred option for community safety initiatives.

The installation also plays a critical role in protecting the adjacent Hakatere Conservation Park, a valued public conservation land that houses diverse ecosystems. By preventing fires from spreading from the village into the park, the sprinkler system not only safeguards human life and property but also conserves the area’s ecological integrity.

The project’s execution involved significant groundwork and coordination, with notable contributions from local volunteers, including Greg Brake, rural controller at Lake Clearwater Volunteer Fire Brigade. His involvement was pivotal in the smooth installation and commissioning of the fire break system.

Looking forward, this sprinkler system is expected to provide a durable and reliable solution to the wildfire challenges faced by the Lake Clearwater community. It stands as a testament to the power of collaborative, environmentally conscious problem-solving in protecting lives, properties, and natural habitats.

As the region heads into another busy summer season, residents and visitors alike can feel a greater sense of security, knowing that measures are in place to prevent the devastating impact of wildfires. This initiative is a crucial step in the ongoing effort to enhance community safety and environmental preservation at Lake Clearwater.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed about the functionality and benefits of the new fire break system by visiting the Lake Clearwater Hutholders’ Association and the Ashburton District Council’s official web platforms.
