Holidaymakers in New Zealand are being warned to take precautions as a band of heavy rain and strong winds are set to hit the country, according to a report by the Newshub.
A subtropical low over the Tasman Sea is expected to bring a strong and moist northeast flow to central and northern parts of New Zealand on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the MetService.
Some areas will likely receive large amounts of rain and may experience severe gale northeasterlies.
A heavy rain warning has been issued for Northland from 1am on Wednesday to 7am on Thursday. The MetService has stated that the area can expect 110 to 160mm of rain to accumulate, mainly in the north and east, with the eastern hills possibly accumulating up to 250mm.
Peak rates of 20 to 30mm/h are expected from Wednesday night. The heavy rain could cause slips, surface flooding, and road damage, while severe gales could make driving conditions hazardous, particularly for motorcycles and high-sided vehicles. Temporary structures such as tents may also be affected.
In addition to the heavy rain warning, Northland is also under a strong wind watch for the same timeframe. The MetService has warned that northeast winds may approach severe gale strength in exposed places. Eastern coastlines from Northland to the Coromandel Peninsula can also expect heavy swells likely to ease on Friday.
Civil Defence Northland has urged those affected by the weather to take extra precautions to protect their belongings and themselves.
They recommend relocating items from any areas of your property prone to flooding, securing outdoor furniture and structures, including tents if you are camping, and ensuring you have supplies ready in case of power outages or road closures.
They also advise driving carefully on the roads on Wednesday and Thursday.
Several other parts of New Zealand are also under strong wind watches, including Auckland and Great Barrier Island, which will last for 24 hours from 9am on Wednesday.
Waikato, Waitomo, Taumarunui, the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty about and west of Tauranga, Taupō, Taranaki, and Taihape are also under a 24-hour strong wind watch from 6pm on Wednesday.
Several heavy rain watches are also in place for parts of the North Island and South Island.
In Auckland, including Great Barrier Island, a watch is in place for 24 hours from 9am on Wednesday, with periods of heavy rain and rainfall amounts that may approach warning criteria, especially in the north and east.
The Coromandel Peninsula is also under a heavy rain watch for 24 hours from 9pm on Wednesday, with rainfall amounts that may reach warning criteria, especially near the ranges.
The Bay of Plenty west of Matatā is under a heavy rain watch from 3am on Thursday to 6am on Friday, with periods of heavy rain and rainfall amounts that may reach warning criteria.
Lastly, Tasman west of Motueka is under a heavy rain watch for 24 hours from midnight on Wednesday to midnight on Thursday, with rainfall amounts that may reach warning criteria, especially in the ranges.
The Thames-Coromandel District Council is warning holidaymakers in the area, particularly those camping or using tents, to prepare for the incoming rain and wind.
They recommend hatching a wet weather plan, checking the drainage of your tents, securing them properly, and having a backup plan in case conditions become uncomfortable.
