Fortis Caravans Leads the Way in Innovation, Sustainability with Urban Caravans

As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, industries are shifting towards sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing processes and materials.

The caravan industry is no exception, Fortis Caravans is leading the way allowing caravanners to witness the unique Urban Caravans with their innovative and sustainable construction methods.

Urban Caravans was founded by Steve Trajcevski, who inherited his passion for constructing caravans from his father. After completing an upholstery and furniture-making apprenticeship, Steve founded New Age Upholstery, a business in the furniture and upholstery industry.

In 2012, Steve and his dad decided to reignite their passion and get back to building quality caravans. Urban Caravans was born, with Fortis Caravans taking the role as its primary dealership. He was determined to introduce new technologies and materials in the manufacturing of their caravans.

Using TIG-Welding & Aluminum Frames

In an exclusive e-mail interview, Fortis Caravans Director Oliver Walker highlighted that one of the key features that set Urban Caravans apart from other manufacturers is their use of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding for the aluminum frames of their caravans.

Walker said TIG welding is a technique that uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to produce the weld, resulting in a strong and precise bond. This technique has replaced the traditional method of stapled timber frames, providing greater durability and longevity to the caravan’s structure.

“All caravans built by Urban have a [special] and uniquely developed aluminum, rot-free Frame. We use TIG-Welding for durability, all of which is done by hand in the Melbourne factory. Urban is the only New Caravan available in New Zealand with an Australian, hand TIG-Welded aluminum frame,” Walker told Modern Campground.

“The framed walls are then lock bolted together for further off-road flexibility and stress absorption. The frames are then attached to the chassis using Z Channel grooves. This means the frame is actually bolted to the chassis, not just the floor like most manufacturers.”

“Glue It, Screw It, Seal It”

The welding method and aluminum frames ensure that the Urban Caravan withstands extreme weather conditions and that its structural integrity remains intact for many years.

Urban Caravans also uses a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) cutting process for their interior furniture, which minimizes waste and ensures the precise cutting of materials.

Walker said they use kiln-dry pine for all interior furniture, which is durable and environmentally sustainable. The “Glue It, Screw It, Seal It” manufacturing process used by the company ensures that all furniture is held together by screws and glue, providing greater strength and durability.

Partnership For Innovation & Sustainability

In alignment with Urban Caravans, Fortis Caravans supports their customers with a factory 5 Year Structural Warranty. For their Tourer and Tuff, it is a gazetted warranty meaning any sign-posted road, the customer is fully covered.

“As for the X-Terrain and X-Treme, the warranty is un-gazetted, giving RVers the chance to take it anywhere with peace of mind. Fortis Caravans is also developing its own network of dealerships to ensure its clients are able to see a friendly face anywhere in New Zealand, both North and South Island,” Walker said.

He said Urban and Fortis attend all major NZ caravan shows, staffed with their own Urban Factory experts flown in from Australia.

As the world moves towards sustainable and eco-friendly products, Urban Caravans’ commitment to innovation and sustainability has positioned them as a leader in the caravan industry

Their construction methods and materials, such as TIG-welded aluminum frames, CNC cutting, and kiln-dry pine, contribute to a unique and eco-friendly travel experience.

Fortis Caravans’ commitment to customer support and the development of their own dealership network ensures that customers have peace of mind and access to expert support anywhere in New Zealand.
