The highly anticipated Hiking Expo 2024, hosted by HikeWest in partnership with Transcend, is set to take place in the picturesque Avon Valley in Western Australia on Saturday, June 22. This family-friendly event, running from noon to 8:30 PM, promises to be a vibrant celebration of the hiking and trail running community.
Visitors to the Expo can look forward to a festive atmosphere with fun activities, delicious food, beverages, and live music. The outdoor expo will showcase the latest in hiking gear, provide insights into various hiking destinations and trails, and offer valuable environmental education.
One of the highlights of the Expo is the opportunity for attendees to enjoy a free guided hike through the scenic Avon Valley. Additionally, visitors can explore several short hikes in and around the historic town of Toodyay, just a short drive from the Expo venue. With nine charming short walks close to the town center or within a 15-minute drive, there’s plenty to explore.
The Toodyay area offers a variety of trails, each with its unique features. The Acacia Reserve Trail, a 3km route with some steep hills, starts at the end of Acacia Close, off Sandplain Rd, and is 8km from Toodyay and 15km from Cobbler Pool.
The Bilya Walk Trail, a 6.5km one-way path along the Avon River bank, begins at Duidgee Park in Toodyay, located 17.3km from Cobbler Pool.
The Dawn Atwell Trail is a 5km easy and mainly flat trail starting at the corner of Julimar Rd and Parkland Drive, 16km from Toodyay and 26km from Cobbler Pool.
Another option is the Majestic Heights Reserve, a 4km trail with some steep slopes and views, beginning at Sandplain Rd, 5.5km from Toodyay and 13km from Cobbler Pool. The Noble Falls Walk Trail, a 3.6km mainly flat path along the river bank, starts at Toodyay Rd, with the car park opposite Noble Falls Tavern, 38.5km from Toodyay and 37km from Cobbler Pool. The Pelham Walk Trail, a 2.3km route with additional loops, features a lookout that overlooks the town and starts at the end of Duke Street, 2km from Toodyay and 17.5km from Cobbler Pool.
For those seeking more challenging terrain, the Rugged Hills trail offers a 7.5km route with some steep slopes and views, starting at Ridley Circle car park, 11km from Toodyay and 20.5km from Cobbler Pool.
The Toodyay Heritage Trail is a 1.8km history-rich path starting at the Toodyay Visitor Centre, 17.3km from Cobbler Pool. Wongamine Nature Reserve provides a 6.5km trail with some steep slopes, starting at Forest Rd, 16.5km from Toodyay and 33km from Cobbler Pool.
Finally, the Woodland Heights Walk is a 5km trail with gentle slopes and views, beginning at the parking area marked “flora road,” off Coondle West Rd, 14km from Toodyay and 26km from Cobbler Pool.
Attendees can also make a weekend of it by camping overnight at the nearby free Cobbler Pool public campground, located just 300 meters off Cobbler Pool Road. For those preferring more comfort, the historic town of Toodyay offers additional accommodation options.
