Australian RV Travelers Hit by Rising Fuel Costs

Fuel costs are among the biggest expenses for RV travelers, and they continue to be a source of hip discomfort for Australian grey nomads, especially with fuel prices recently edging towards AU$2 per liter in a few major cities, according to a report.

Based on the rig you use and camping style, fuel could account for about a third of daily expenses during a trip towing a caravan, so rising fuel prices can drain the budgets of many RV travelers.

Even as the average national price for gasoline in Australia decreased by 25 cents per liter in the initial months of COVID-19, the gradual ease of travel restrictions has led to an increase in fees paid at the pump.

Prices of fuel in Australia have risen to record levels in mid-2021 and are still at an all-time high. There is a myriad of factors in play, including the crude oil price recently reaching a record high of seven years and the risk of Russia invading Ukraine, which could affect global oil supplies and the declining Australian dollar.

As a result, many RV travelers with tight budgets are forced to cut back on the number of miles driven every week or reduce other expenses for travel like the cost of parking at caravan parks for a longer time on the road.

Some of the energy-saving strategies that you can take to save even more money for your next caravan trip or motorhome adventure include using a wind deflector, keeping tire pressures up, keeping the speed down, avoiding using cruise control, anticipating hill climbs, using a fuel app, and carrying extra fuel.
