TTDC Proposes 7.65-Acre Camping and Glamping Development in Tiruvannamalai District

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has proposed the development of camping and glamping facilities at Jawadhu Hills in Tamil Nadu as part of a broader effort to expand experiential and sustainable tourism offerings in the state.

The project site spans 7.65 acres in Tiruvannamalai district, an area known for its forested landscape and relatively low levels of commercial tourism activity compared with other destinations in the region.

According to a senior TTDC official, the state is prioritizing tourism models that allow visitors to engage with natural environments while limiting ecological impact.

“Experiential and sustainable tourism is the way forward. Glamping and camping-based accommodation are low-impact models that appeal to today’s travellers who seek authentic outdoor experiences,” the official told Mid-Day.

As part of the initiative, TTDC has identified scenic locations across Tamil Nadu for similar camping infrastructure developments equipped with essential amenities. Jawadhu Hills has been selected as one of the key sites under this strategy, and basic infrastructure has already been developed on the 7.65-acre parcel.

TTDC has floated a tender to appoint a concessionaire responsible for preparing a detailed project report and executing the development. The project will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with the selected private partner tasked with financing, operations, management, and maintenance of the site.

Proposed accommodations include semi-permanent structures such as luxury tents, safari tents, glamping domes, prefabricated wooden or bamboo cottages, modular cottages, and container-based units.

Officials stated that the infrastructure will be developed without disturbing natural resources in and around Jawadhu Hills, with an emphasis on eco-friendly construction practices and sustainable operations. The project is expected to be completed within the current year, according to officials.

For outdoor hospitality operators, the Jawadhu Hills project reflects several notable trends: state-backed PPP frameworks for nature-based accommodations, growing public-sector interest in glamping as a low-impact lodging format, and the use of concessionaire models to reduce government operational exposure.

Business owners considering expansion in India or similar emerging markets may view this as an indicator of increasing institutional support for semi-permanent, modular accommodations that can be deployed with relatively lower land disturbance and potentially faster development timelines.

Monitoring tender structures, concession terms, and environmental compliance requirements in projects like this may provide insight into how state tourism bodies are shaping the next phase of eco-focused destination development.
