Boluvampatti Reserve Forest Fire Challenges Firefighting Efforts and Raises Concerns for Campers

For the fourth consecutive day, a wildfire continues to rage in the Boluvampatti block II reserve forest of the Madukkarai range, challenging firefighting efforts and raising concerns among campers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Over 150 frontline staff from the Coimbatore forest division and neighboring divisions are working alongside 20 senior officials to combat the flames, as per a report by The Times of India.

According to S Ramasubramanian, conservator of forests, the fire has devastated the steep, rocky terrain, consuming dry grass and shrubs. The challenging landscape has made it difficult for firefighters to access affected areas.

District forest officer N Jayaraj revealed that while firefighters have tried to contain the fire in major areas, it has still spread across the terrain.

To protect a key spot with a large concentration of bamboo, authorities have focused their efforts on extinguishing the fire in that area. The forest department has requested the state government to seek assistance from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to help douse the fire in inaccessible regions.

A farm at the foothills of the reserve forest offers an adequate water supply to combat the flames. IAF helicopters fitted with ‘Bambi’ Buckets could draw water from the farm to aid firefighting efforts.

Jayaraj mentioned that two fire tenders were brought to the area, and firemen sprayed water to prevent the fire from spreading further.

The forest department aims to extinguish the fire by Saturday morning, Ramasubramanian said. If unsuccessful, the government will contact the IAF Sulur station for helicopters to assist in putting out the fire.

The ongoing wildfire creates uncertainty for campers and outdoor enthusiasts planning trips to the area. As the fire persists, potential visitors are advised to stay informed about the situation and consider alternative destinations for their outdoor activities.

Boluvampatti Reserve forest is a popular destination for nature lovers, offering a tranquil environment to connect with nature. The current wildfire not only threatens the region’s ecosystem but also impacts local tourism and recreational activities.

Authorities will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates on the progress of firefighting efforts. Campers and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to stay up to date on the latest developments and prioritize safety in their travel plans.
