Westmoreland State Park to Celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary and Park’s 90th Year on June 27

Westmoreland State Park will mark two milestones on June 27, 2026, with a Foundation Celebration recognizing both the 250th anniversary of the United States and the park’s 90th anniversary as a Virginia state park.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Westmoreland State Park and is part of the statewide VA250 initiative as well as the Northern Neck 250 commemoration. Organizers say the celebration is intended to highlight the historical significance of the Northern Neck region and its contributions to the nation’s founding.

The free public event will feature a range of activities designed to showcase local history, culture, and community organizations. Historical groups from across the region are expected to present exhibits, demonstrations, and educational displays focused on the area’s past.

Visitors will also have access to craft vendors offering handmade products, as well as food trucks serving a variety of menu options.

Additional attractions will include historical games, hands-on activities for families, and demonstrations led by park staff and partner organizations. A beer garden hosted by Northern Neck Brewing Co. will offer locally produced craft beverages in an outdoor setting.

A significant component of the celebration will focus on the 90th anniversary of Westmoreland State Park. Organizers plan to recognize the contributions of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), whose crews helped establish many of the park’s original facilities during the 1930s.

The CCC, a New Deal-era program, played a major role in developing parks and public lands across the United States, and many of the structures, trails, and recreational amenities built by its workers remain in use today.

The event will also connect local history to the broader national commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. The Northern Neck region has long been associated with several prominent figures from the nation’s early history, including George Washington and James Monroe, both of whom were born in the region.

For outdoor hospitality professionals, heritage-focused events such as this illustrate how public parks and tourism destinations can use milestone anniversaries and historical themes to attract visitors, strengthen community partnerships, and diversify programming.

Anniversary celebrations often create opportunities for collaboration with local businesses, food vendors, artisans, breweries, and historical organizations while encouraging repeat visitation and regional tourism spending.

Admission to the Foundation Celebration is free, although standard parking fees will apply. Visitors seeking additional information may contact Westmoreland State Park at westmoreland@dcr.virginia.gov or by calling 804-493-8821.
