The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency in Nigeria, has announced a temporary closure of all public parks under its management as the state undertakes routine maintenance and upgrade work across its green spaces.
According to Daily Post, the decision follows a period of heightened use during the recent festive season, which the agency says has increased wear and tear on facilities and landscapes throughout Lagos.
The closures are intended to allow crews uninterrupted access to carry out necessary work that will improve safety, cleanliness, and overall visitor experience when the parks reopen.
In a statement released on January 9 and shared via its official platforms early Saturday, LASPARK said, “All parks under our management will be closed to the public from January 12 to January 31, 2026. This follows increased visitor activity during the recent festive season.”
The agency emphasized that the move is temporary and part of a structured plan rather than a response to any single incident or concern.
Several of the state’s most popular recreational areas will be affected by the closure period. According to the agency, this includes “Ndubisi Kanu Park, Alausa JJT Park, Dr. Finnih Abayomi Park in Oregun, and all other LASPARK-managed parks across Lagos State.”
These parks serve as important gathering spaces for families, fitness enthusiasts, and tourists, making the timing and communication of the closure especially important for regular visitors.
Providing further context, LASPARK explained the scope of the work planned during the shutdown.
“The temporary shutdown is necessary to carry out essential landscaping, facility repairs, and general upgrades to ensure that our parks remain safe, clean, and enjoyable for residents and visitors.”
The agency also framed the effort within its long-term goals for urban green spaces, adding, “This maintenance programme is part of our commitment to providing well-maintained green spaces that promote relaxation, wellness, and environmental sustainability.”
To address concerns about access and timelines, LASPARK reassured the public that “all parks will reopen at the end of the maintenance period.” The agency encouraged residents to look forward to improved facilities and a better overall park experience once the work is complete, reinforcing the role these spaces play in daily life across the state.
This news underscores the importance of well-maintained urban green spaces as reliable destinations and rest points for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts, influencing trip planning, visitor satisfaction, and long-term confidence in public recreation infrastructure.
