Record Attendance at North Carolina RV Shows Signals Strong Growth for the Industry in 2023

The North Carolina RV Dealers Association has reported record attendance at its first three RV shows of 2023, held in Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh. With over 27,000 attendees combined, the numbers align with the growing interest in RVing being reported throughout the country.

According to Jeff Haughton, event director at Apple Rock Advertising & Promotions, many younger buyers are showing a greater interest in RVs. With remote work becoming more commonplace, RVs provide the flexibility to work from virtually anywhere, making them an attractive option for those looking for a change of scenery.

The RV industry is projecting continued growth in 2023, as it has historically been a bellwether for consumer confidence and spending. A recent survey by the RV Industry Association (RVIA) reported that 37% of American leisure travelers, representing 67 million, plan to take an RV trip this year. The top reasons cited for RV travel were exploring the outdoors and having additional flexibility through remote work or school.

Finances also play a role in people’s decision to take an RV trip, with RV vacations costing on average 50% less than comparable hotel and plane ride trips and a third less than hotel and car ride trips.

Younger age groups, such as Gen Z and Millennials, are showing the highest interest in RVing, with 49% and 48% planning to take an RV trip next year. Purchase intent is also high among these age groups, with 41% of Gen Z and 35% of Millennials planning to buy an RV in the next year.

The most recent Progressive NCRVDA Raleigh RV Show & Sale, held February 16-19, featured over 190 different types and brands of new and used RVs, including motorhomes, travel trailers, and more. The show also offered free educational seminars and giveaways, making it a must-attend event for RV enthusiasts.

The record attendance at the North Carolina RV shows indicates that more people are becoming interested in RVing as a travel option. The younger age groups’ high interest in RVing and their purchase intent are also promising for the industry’s future growth.

Additionally, the RVIA survey’s findings that finances are a driving factor in people’s decision to take an RV trip could attract more budget-conscious travelers to the RV lifestyle, further boosting the industry’s growth.

The record attendance at the North Carolina RV shows, and the survey’s findings demonstrate a growing interest in RVing, which could translate into increased sales and revenue for RV manufacturers and dealers, and could potentially translate to increased visitation and occupancy for campground and RV parks.
