The Jasper Indigenous Forum has collaborated with Parks Canada and agreed on an appropriate temporary name for the former Pocahontas Campground, located in the park’s eastern end.
According to a report, Parks Canada is committed to an ecosystem of national heritage sites that acknowledges and honors the contributions of both contemporary and historical indigenous people, their history, their cultures, and the unique relationships Indigenous peoples have with their ancestral waters and lands.
On Friday, members of the Advisory Group and Parks Canada announced the decision to select Miette as an interim stage to the decision-making process. The chosen name Miette is consistent with existing names used in the region of Jasper National Park. The campground is located along Miette Road, which leads guests through the Miette River to the Miette Hot Springs.
All parties have agreed to discuss a mutually acceptable permanent campground name that honors Indigenous cultures and ties in Jasper National Park.
“Parks Canada and Indigenous peoples are partners in conserving natural and cultural heritage and sharing the stories of these treasured places. The interim renaming of Miette will allow the time needed to continue discussions to ensure community members of all ages see their culture and language reflected back on these lands of enduring significance,” said Alan Fehr,

In the meantime, Miette Campground will appear on all signs, correspondence, and reservations and will also be reflected in the names of the area’s warden cabin and hiking trail.
Reservations seekers will find Miette Campground under its new temporary name for booking purposes.
According to Parks Canada, honoring connection to place is essential for actions and outcomes related to reconciliation. They acknowledge that Indigenous peoples’ cultures and identities are rooted in the land.
