When people go out camping, bringing almost an entire collection of gear is inevitable. For Drew of the YouTube channel Playing with Sticks, however, bringing excessive camping gear tends to decrease his overall camping experience. This is why he built his own bicycle camping trailer.
“I came to this conclusion when I realized almost all the camping gear I deem as ‘necessary’ may actually be decreasing my overall camping experience,” the YouTuber said.
“So to combat this excessive camping gear creep, my idea is to physically limit what I can take with me to the campsite,” he added.
While admittedly saying he can choose to go the bikepacking route, he expressed that his intent in creating the bike trailer was not to go “completely bare bones,” but to build a rig that can haul just enough gear for a comfortable and active camping experience.
Similar to pursuing the rustic camping experience, the experience the vehicle would provide would require Drew to cut ties with many of his electronics, oversized gear, and unnecessary tools.
“Basically, essential camping gear with a little room for a splurge item or two, but no more than that,” he said.
