Wyoming Outdoor Recreation Report Highlights Industry’s Economic and Community Impact

The Jay Kemmerer Wyoming Outdoor Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality (WORTH) Institute at the University of Wyoming, in collaboration with the Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation, has released a comprehensive report detailing the significant contributions of outdoor recreation to Wyoming’s economy and communities according to a press release.

According to the report, Wyoming’s outdoor recreation industry generated $2.2 billion in 2023, accounting for 4.1 percent of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP). The sector has experienced steady growth, with an annual increase of 4.5 percent since 2012.

The study emphasizes the industry’s role in supporting employment, with 15,798 jobs tied to outdoor recreation. It also breaks down the economic impact of various outdoor activities, including snow sports, RVing, boating, fishing, and sports such as golf and tennis.

Additionally, it notes a surge in participation in activities like shooting sports and canoeing in 2023.

Highlighted in the report are several community-driven projects that received funding through the Wyoming Outdoor Recreation Collaborative Grant program and the American Rescue Plan Act, both managed by the Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation.

These projects were selected for their potential to enhance local economies, improve recreational opportunities, foster partnerships, address COVID-19 impacts, ensure equitable access, and contribute to residents’ overall quality of life.

The report also covers two major state events—the eighth annual Governor’s Match, a premier shooting competition, and the second annual Firearms and Outdoor Recreation Expo, which brings together Wyoming-based manufacturers and industry partners to celebrate the state’s outdoor heritage.

“This report underscores the substantial role outdoor recreation plays in Wyoming’s economy and quality of life,” said Dan McCoy, director of the Jay Kemmerer WORTH Institute. “It’s also inspiring to see how many communities have benefited from funding to improve and expand outdoor opportunities.”

Mark Tesoro, manager of the Wyoming Office of Outdoor Recreation, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The 2024 Wyoming Outdoor Recreation Report showcases our ongoing collaboration with the University of Wyoming and highlights the vital role this industry plays in our communities and economy at both the local and state levels.”

The Jay Kemmerer WORTH Institute focuses on strengthening and diversifying Wyoming’s economy through outdoor recreation, tourism, and hospitality. It provides research, educational resources, and outreach to support these industries. The institute was renamed in December following a generous $5 million gift from Jay and Karen Kemmerer.

The findings of this report reinforce the outdoor recreation industry’s vital role in Wyoming’s economy and community well-being, highlighting its growth, job creation, and continued investments in public outdoor spaces.
